ESAT preparation

Free lessons, original mock papers and topic practice for the Engineering and Science Admissions Test.

How the test works

Five modules are available: Mathematics 1, Mathematics 2, Physics, Chemistry and Biology. Mathematics 1 is compulsory; candidates then choose two more, and most take three modules in total.

Format
Computer-based, multiple choice
Each module
27 questions, 40 minutes
Most candidates
3 modules, 120 minutes
Marking

  • Maths 1

Compulsory for every ESAT course. School mathematics from number and ratio through algebra, graphs, geometry, statistics and probability.

  • Maths 2

Extends Maths 1 with the first year of A-level Mathematics: quadratics and functions, sequences, coordinate geometry, trigonometry, logarithms, calculus.

  • Physics

Electricity, magnetism, mechanics, thermal physics, matter, waves and radioactivity, with quantitative reasoning throughout.

  • Chemistry

Atomic structure, bonding, the mole, equilibrium, energetics, rates, redox, inorganic and organic chemistry.

  • Biology

Cells, transport, genetics, DNA, enzymes, respiration, organ systems, homeostasis, ecosystems and plant physiology.

A sensible order

  1. Find the gaps

Sit the free sample, or a full module mock, and mark it honestly. Note which topics cost you marks.

  2. Fix them

Read the free lesson for each weak topic, then work through its practice set. Redo the questions you missed after a week.

  3. Rehearse

Sit a fresh mock for each module under timed conditions, with no calculator. Then read every solution, including the ones you guessed.

Papers for every module

5 mocks and 52 of 52 topic sets are ready. The rest are being written and checked now.
